The Iowa Hawkeyes close the 2020s with Spencer Petras and Cade McNamara leading the way at quarterback.
Spencer Petras took the reins early, throwing for 2,500 yards in 2020 despite a 1-3 start. Cade McNamara stepped in after Petras’ injury in 2021, guiding Iowa to a 10-4 finish and a Citrus Bowl win over Kentucky. Alex Padgett also saw time in 2022, but injuries cut his season short. By 2023, Petras returned, throwing for 2,700 yards and 16 touchdowns in a resurgent year.
Petras’ arm strength and McNamara’s mobility defined the decade. Petras set a school record with 300+ passing yards in four straight games in 2023, while McNamara’s 4-0 record as a starter in 2021 included a 28-20 win over Michigan. Their production kept Iowa in Big Ten title races, even as the defense carried much of the load. The 2020s also saw Iowa rank top-25 in passing efficiency three times under Kirk Ferentz.
The Hawkeyes open 2026 with a new starter after Petras’ graduation, but the pipeline stays strong. Freshman QB Brayden Narveson impressed in spring drills, throwing three TDs in the first scrimmage. Iowa’s next game is September 5 against Northern Illinois Huskies, a chance to test Narveson early. If he clicks, Ferentz could push for another top-25 finish.
Narveson’s development hinges on in-game reps, and Ferentz isn’t rushing him. The staff plans to redshirt Narveson unless injuries force his hand. Meanwhile, backup QB Aidan Bouman returns from a hand injury, adding depth. The Hawkeyes’ 2026 opener is a proving ground—Narveson’s first real test under center.
